Which Cables Can Be Directly Buried?

"Can this cable be directly buried?"

We get asked this question all the time, so we've come up with an answer for everyone.

We often get questions about whether a certain cable qualifies as direct burial. We're always happy to answer these questions because we know it can get confusing - aside from a few cables (like UF-B and URD) that are always appropriate for direct burial, there are many, many more that are equipped with a sufficient jacket to be rated for direct burial.

To help customers find the right cable, we've added an entirely new section to our website. You can now find all cables rated for direct burial in one place!

Trenched wire Service to Barn

Sending a thanks to our customer, James, for sending us this photo depicting the trench dug between his barn and his service pole.  We like the angle of this photo and how it captures two main points of connection - the barn and the service pole.  James purchased our THHN Copper Building Wire for the connection and ran it through a conduit which will then be laid in the trench seen above.

THHN Copper Building wire is very popular for this type of installation.

For our customers who think copper is a bit too expensive for their project, we offer a great single aluminum conductor and a URD Multi-Conductor Aluminum Cable.

THHN Copper Building Wire Vs. Tray Cable (THHN-PVC)

Are you looking for a multi-conductor cable with THHN wire?  Say you need 4 runs of THHN wire but want it all in one jacket, do you know which cable to look for?

We here at Wire And Cable Your Way often get calls from first time customers who know they need THHN wires but want it all in one jacket and are not exactly sure where to find this cable?

If this sounds familiar to you we recommend taking a look at our Tray Cable (THHN-PVC).

Our Tray Cable (THHN-PVC) consists of a strong durable jacket rated for direct burial that is filled with multiple conductors of THHN wire.  Being that it is rated for direct burial, you do not need a conduit.  Many of our Tray Cables also come with a ground wire.

The Tray Cable differs from standard THHN Building Wire in that THHN Building Wire comes in a nylon jacket that can only buried in a conduit underground.   THHN Copper Building Wire is also one single conductor.

If you are not sure which one is best for your project please take a look at both the categories which includes pricing and the different sizes:
