THHN/THWN-2 Copper Wire

Take care of general purpose wiring in branch circuits, control circuits, machine tools, and appliances with THHN, the most commonly used building wire. THHN (thermoplastic high heat-resistant nylon) wire is available in a wider range of gauges and is more heat resistant.

THHN is a thermoplastic, high-heat resistant, nylon coated wire. THWN is essentially the same as THHN, but can withstand higher temperatures in both dry and wet conditions. THHN can only withstand temperatures of up to 75°C in wet conditions, while THWN can handle up to 90°C. In most cases, these wires can be used interchangeably in general purpose wiring in branch circuits, control circuits, machine tools, and appliances.

THHN Wire Properties

The different letters in THHN wire denote particular properties of the cable:

T for Thermoplastic
HH for High Heat-Resistent, and
N for Nylon Coated .

For wire also rated as THWN: Thermoplastic Heat and Water Resistant Nylon Coated.

These characteristics make THHN wire an excellent choice for controlling outdoor factors that would otherwise alter the performance of wire cable. For end users, this means greater flexibility for applications like push-button stations, fire alarm controls, and temperature control systems.

Cost Effectiveness
THHN wire has grown in popularity since it is a cost effective alternative compared to other types of building wire. For indoor and outdoor applications where longevity is valued, THHN wire provides the peace of mind that contractors and homeowners demand. Because THHN wire is UL-approved for permanent installation, it is commonly used in new construction and a variety of other projects where the wire will not need to be removed.
